The creator of impressive haute couture will be honoured three times in 2023. Karl Lagerfeld's life story and career will be released as a film, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will dedicate a fantastic exhibition to him and the world-famous Met Gala charity event will pay posthumous tribute to the fashion tsar.

Three years after his death, the life of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is being filmed.

The film tells the life story and career of probably the greatest designer of his time. It describes the most important relationships in the life of Karl Lagerfeld, who died in February 2019 at the age of 85.

Oscar winner Jared Leto takes the lead role as actor and producer. One cannot imagine a more challenging and difficult role. The Hollywood superstar and the designer knew each other personally, so Jared Leto will also be able to draw on his own memories and not only embody a man of the century who was admired the world over, but also portray a character that is memorably idiosyncratic, brilliant and never quite graspable.

Jared Leto won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”. More recently, as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and versatile character actors, he has starred in cult films such as “House of Gucci” about the Italian fashion dynasty. He last appeared as a producer on the documentary “A Day in the Life of America” in 2019.

The exact release date in 2023 has not yet been set, as no director has yet been found. The project is supported by the Karl Lagerfeld company. Three of Lagerfeld’s closest companions are involved in the production: His long-time communications consultant Caroline Lebar, the CEO of Maison Karl Lagerfeld Pier Paolo Righi and Sébastien Jondeau, who was Lagerfeld’s chauffeur, bodyguard, assistant and close confidant.

In addition, Karl Lagerfeld will receive other very special tributes in the coming year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is dedicating a gigantic exhibition to him entitled “Karl Lagerfeld – A Line of Beauty”, and the world-famous Met Gala will open on 1 May 2023 under the sign of his work.

The New National Gallery will reopen on 22 August 2021, our art writer Esther Harrison missed the exhibition as well
