How the Danish concept of life can get you happily through the grey days. Danes and Scandinavians are particularly happy. The United Nations World Happiness Report clearly shows this. Denmark is among the top three nations in the world year after year, closely followed by the other Scandinavian countries. The fact that they are so happy despite their particularly short and dark days in winter is due to the concept of life called hygge.

The term “hygge” describes the Danish philosophy of life. It is not so easy to translate because it encompasses so many aspects. It is about finding more happiness in everyday life, enjoying the small moments and going through life with positive thoughts.

Hygge stands for joie de vivre and harmony, security and time with family and friends. Consciously experiencing relaxation, security as well as cosiness and can be applied to all areas of life, from living to eating to family.

An important point of the Hygge principle is to create an atmosphere of well-being. In your own four walls, small lamps, fairy lights, a fireplace and candlelight create a warm, indirect light and a special feeling of well-being.

Hygge is what relaxes. This can be done alone, snuggled up in a blanket with your favourite show on or sitting by the window with a cup of tea in hand watching the world go by outside.

A good work-life balance is a top priority for the Danes.

Mindfulness and enjoyment go hand in hand: if you know how to enjoy, you automatically live in the moment and contentment becomes a constant companion. Take pleasure in the small things of everyday life, which then suddenly don’t seem so small anymore.

Danes have a strong connection to nature. That’s why they go outside as often as possible, even in wind and weather, because nature has a strong impact on our bodies and our well-being.
