The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Britain's third largest city has a proud history.

But Manchester is also a vibrant hotspot with a diverse nightlife, a lively arts scene and excellent cultural offerings. Bands like the “Smiths”, “Joy Division” or “Oasis” have started their worldwide career from here. Oh yes, Cristiano Ronaldo also had his time here and has now returned to Manchester United.

In the middle of Manchester is the Science and Industry Museum. Part of the museum complex are also the oldest preserved passenger station in the world and the historic railway warehouse from 1830. As the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester is also considered the first industrial city in the world. Thus, this city not only shaped the future of England, but changed the face of the entire world forever. And so many still associate Manchester with a dreary industrial city or one will be reduced his view of the city as the home of the two football clubs Manchester United and Manchester City. But that has changed.ed und Manchester City. Das hat sich aber geändert.

Art is omnipresent in Manchester

Today the city stands for science, politics, music, sport and – art! That’s what they’re building on here in Manchester. In 2000, for example, the gallery complex and the theatre The Lowry were opened by Queen Elizabeth. Here there is a diverse programme of theatre, opera, dance, musicals, comedy, visual arts and music. In autumn 2017, Manchester was designated a UNESCO City of Literature. Important art museums shape the art scene in the city. The Manchester Art Gallery is probably one of the best known for its collection of 19th-century British artists, but it also showcases works by international artists. In addition to thousands of paintings, watercolors and more than 13,000 craft objects, the museum also exhibits industrially produced objects. Other museums are also causing a stir, such as the Imperial War Museum in Trafford, built by Daniel Libeskind, in whose neighborhood a whole new district is currently being built with a high density of media companies, museums, galleries, theaters, clubs, restaurants and bars.

Science and Industry bar manchester 1

Science & Industry Bar

For experimental cocktails, we recommend the ScienceandIndustry bar (49 – 51 Thomas Street Northern Quarter). The atmosphere here is heated, exotically sultry with a tropical twist – herringbone parquet flooring, vaulted blackened ceilings and leather benches meet tropical details such as pineapple bookends at the bar and palm trees in the midst of a refined industrial architecture.

King StreetTownhouseHotel – an experience in the heart of Manchester

King Street Townhouse Hotel

Manchester architect Edward Salomons designed this building in 1872 as the Manchester Salford Trustees Bank, but today it houses the King Street Townhouse (10 Booth St, Manchester M2 4AW), a 40-room boutique hotel that’s part of the Eclectic Hotel Collection. The rooms are simply but elegantly decorated, with beautiful white bedding and sleek wooden furniture – some of the rooms even have a freestanding bath. The special feature: The infinity pool on the seventh floor. Here you can relax with an excellent view of the city.

Hotel Gotham

In an Art Deco building, formerly used as a bank, Hotel Gotham (100 King St, Manchester M2 4W) is a glamorous boutique hotel. Maracant and extraordinary – both outside and in. The carpets are boldly patterned in black and white, the beds are made of black leather and faux fur throws are draped over the beds. The Gotham is a modern – and luxurious – take on Manchester’s punk era. The special feature: Hotel guests have access to a members’ club on the seventh floor, overlooking the city.
