A horizon is generally a wonderful thing when it comes to proving one’s innovative strength. For this purpose, the horizon, primarily one’s own, is often broadened or, alternatively, completely new horizons are discovered. The cooperation between Bentley and the no less renowned distillery The Macallan is just such an undertaking, as the two protagonists make clear with the name of their first joint work: The Macallan Horizon. It is the Scottish brand’s first limited-edition single malt whiskey, and the container is not simply a bottle but a work of design art, if Chris Cooke, Bentley’s Product and Lifestyle Design Manager, and Jaume Ferras, Global Creative Director for The Macallan, are to be believed.
Well, the idea is indeed anything but obvious: the traditionally vertical orientation of a whisky bottle has been shifted to the horizontal and thus traces the dynamic direction of movement of a vehicle. Accordingly, a stand was dispensed with and instead an artfully twisted 3D frame was specially made. And because the design is so dynamic, it can also point towards the future, at least in terms of sustainability. Macallan, for example, contributed copper from decommissioned stills, Bentley contributed aluminium from the production of the Continental GT, the Flying Spur and the Bentayga as well as the leather used in the Mulliner Batur Grand Tourer – it is said to be the world’s lowest CO2 leather. The result is described by Cooke as “a fusion of the sharply defined yet curved Bentley design DNA, the innovation of The Macallan and the recycled materials of the two iconic British brands”.
We prefer to look at the whole thing from the pragmatic side, after all, this is proof that cultivated motoring can indeed go hand in hand with exclusive palate enjoyment. Of course, only if you follow the correct order: First drive and enjoy. Then drink and enjoy. The market launch of The Macallan Horizon is planned for summer 2023.
